A Gilded Egyptian Revival Timepiece Desk Clock

£1,650.00

An Egyptian revival timepiece in a gilded and bronzed case. The four pillared eight day movement with a cylinder escapement is housed in a drum case, mounted behind a crisp white enamel dial with roman numerals and blued steel shape hands. The drum is raised on an engraved pedestal and surmounted by a bronzed bust of a pharaoh. Flanked by a pair of seated sphinx with bronzed wings and headdresses, and gilded bodies on a marble base.

Dating from the late 19th Century, this is a rare example of the Egyptian revival style, when the interest in all things Egyptian was re-ignited after the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869.
